Kraftwerk had never played festivals before, presumably never played outdoors before. They apparently went to the prior year Global Gathering incognito to decide for themselves whether it would work in a large tent full of young(ish) people (mostly) under the influence of various intoxicants. Judged for yourself if it worked, entrance to the tent had to be stopped hours before they came on. Everyone including most of the other artists on the bill wanted to see their glorious return.
